What is IPL treatment for dry eyes?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is a non-invasive procedure used to help manage certain types of Dry Eye Disease, particularly when it is linked to problems with the eyelid oil glands (known as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction).
During treatment, carefully controlled pulses of light are applied to the skin around the eyelids and cheeks. These light pulses help improve the function of the oil-producing glands in the eyelids, which are essential for maintaining a stable and healthy tear film.
By improving gland function and reducing inflammation around the eyes, IPL treatment can provide long-term relief from symptoms such as dryness, irritation, burning, and fluctuating vision without the need for drops or other treatments.
About the treatment
Facial hair within the treatment area must be removed 24 hours prior to treatment. On the day of treatment do not wear any make up, false eyelashes or contact lenses. Failure to follow these steps may mean we are unable to carry out your treatment on the day.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for my treatment?
Some individuals may experience a mild sunburn feeling, including redness and mild swelling following treatment. For the first 48 hours after treatment, avoid direct sun where possible. Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen (SPF 50). Continue to wear sunscreen for two weeks following treatment.
What can I expect after treatment?
As with any medical procedure, there are possible risks that may occur. These will be discussed with you in detail before your appointment.
Are there any risks to treatment?
For best results, three IPL treatments are advised at specific intervals:
Session 1: Day 1
Session 2: Day 14
Session 3: Day 45
Session 4: Day 75 (if required)
Deviating from the above schedule may result in sub-optimal results. Following the initial course, annual top-up treatments are usually recommended to main results.
How many sessions will I need?
You may feel a warm or snapping sensation during the procedure, but most patients find the treatment very tolerable.
